About the Position

We are looking for an eDiscovery Law Clerk to join the Litigation practice area in our Toronto office. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting our team of litigation lawyers on complex legal matters. The ideal candidate will bring substantial previous litigation experience, a thorough understanding of legal procedures and statutes, exceptional organizational skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of legal and administrative duties while assisting litigation lawyers with complex matters
  • Organize and manage files
  • Draft originating applications and pleadings for interlocutory proceedings
  • Summarize discovery evidence
  • Assemble answers to undertakings
  • Negotiate settlement of claims under supervision of lawyer, if required
  • Prepare charts, chronologies and summaries of documentary evidence for use on discovery and trial
  • Act as a liaison between lawyer/client and lawyer/opposing counsel
  • Assist counsel in preparation of arguments for motions
  • Attend court proceedings to be cross-examined as deponent of affidavit
  • Assist at trial, including attending with counsel and organizing the attendance of witnesses
  • Perform legal research as required in preparation of pleadings, etc.
  • Appear before local Registrar to settle orders
  • Conduct examinations in aid of execution
  • Research rules of procedure for various courts and administrative tribunals

Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized Law Clerk or Legal Administration program
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is preferred
  • Hardworking and self-motivated
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong administrative and research skills
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Strong computer skills, specifically with Microsoft Word
  • Proven problem-solving ability
  • Works well autonomously, while possessing a team player attitude
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to interact with individuals at all levels
  • Flexible to work outside regular working hours, when necessary
  • Strong knowledge of litigation law
  • Thorough knowledge of legal procedures and statutes
