Davies is proud to represent, on a pro bono basis, the World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) and one of its directors, Ms. Amrit Kaur, in their challenge to Québec’s Act respecting the laicity of the State.
Represented by a Davies team comprising Léon Moubayed, Faiz Lalani and Sarah Gorguos, the WSO and Ms. Kaur are challenging the constitutionality of the Act, including the provisions that ban the wearing of religious symbols by certain public sector employees. The hearing begins today before the Superior Court of Québec.
Davies has a long tradition of pro bono service. In 1915, the firm acted for Annie MacDonald Langstaff in her extended legal battle to allow women to practise law in Québec. More recently, the firm represented Égale Canada in a lawsuit contesting certain legislative provisions alleged to be discriminatory against transgender, non-binary and intersex people.
The WSO is a non-profit human rights organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the Sikh diaspora, protecting the fundamental rights of all individuals and eliminating all forms of discrimination.
