General Questions

• How does Davies give back?

  Every summer, students identify a local organization or cause that they wish to support. They then develop a plan to have an impact through action, rather than simply raising funds. Past initiatives have included serving meals to homeless people, organizing a celebration at a nursing home and helping to prepare a summer camp for underprivileged children.

  We also have an active Centraide campaign, and we support a number of other charities, including Lawyers without Borders, Educaloi, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the McCord Museum’s Annual Sugar Ball.

• From which schools/programs does Davies accept students?

  For our student program, you must be studying in a civil law program and/or be eligible for admission to the bar in Québec.

• Can I apply in my first year of law school?

  No. We are a party to the Entente de recrutement, and as required by that agreement, we do not accept applications from first-year students.

• Do I need to be fluently bilingual to work at Davies?

  Not initially. Although our lawyers work in both official languages, some students speak or write only in English or French when they start. We expect that you’ll learn on the job, and we’ll provide courses for those who need to improve their language skills.

• How will pass/fail grading on my transcripts affect my application?

  Davies is committed to a holistic review of every candidate’s application, which includes both academic and non-academic accomplishments. We continue to look for candidates who are well-rounded, motivated and creative problem-solvers who will enrich and strengthen our team with their diverse experiences, achievements and personal stories. Accordingly, we want to put your mind at ease that your application to Davies will not be negatively affected by elected or mandated pass/fail or credit/no credit grading.

Summer Program

• How long is the summer program?

  The program spans 13 weeks (including two weeks of orientation) for those completing their first summer with us. If you’re returning for an additional summer, the program runs for a minimum of 11 weeks.

• When are summer students hired?

  We don’t hire students solely for one summer. We offer summer positions to the law students we hire to be stagiaires when they graduate. We encourage you to spend at least one summer with us prior to your stage.

• Can I pursue another internship or job while at Davies?

• Does the firm have a secondment program?

  Yes. Every summer we place at least one returning student in a secondment role with a client.

• Will I be assigned a mentor?

  Yes. A few weeks after beginning your first summer with us, you’ll be invited to choose a lawyer as your mentor.

Stagiaires

• When are stagiaires hired?

  The majority of our stagiaires are recruited through the annual Course aux stages process in March. We occasionally hire exceptional students outside that process.

• How long is the stagiaire program?

  The program runs for six months beginning in January or May, after the bar exams.
